Dignity and Daily Bread or Study Guide for Use with Financial Accounting

Dignity and Daily Bread: New Forms of Economic Organising among Poor Women in the Third World and the First

Author: S Rowbotham

Dignity and Daily Bread compares the lives of women in both developed and undeveloped countries and examines how women have themselves organized forms of production. Covering a wide range of issues and areas, from cotton production in Bombay, to conditions in Mexico and in some of the Far East economies, the contributors attempt to break down some of the ideological barriers that colonialism and racism build up among women. The immediacy of these accounts brings to life women's experience in a variety of patriarchal societies and also serves to underline the book's topicality in a time of particular global economic hardship. Dignity and Daily Bread will make a significant contribution to both women's studies and development studies.

Study Guide for Use with Financial Accounting

Author: Robert Libby

The authors wrote this text based on their belief that the subject of financial accounting is inherently interesting, but financial textbooks are often not. They believe most financial accounting textbooks fail to demonstrate that accounting is an exciting field of study and one that is important to future careers in business. When writing this text, they considered career relevance as their guide when selecting material, and the need to engage the student as their guide to style, pedagogy, and design. Libby/Libby/Short is the only financial accounting text to successfully implement a real-world,single focus company approach in every chapter. Students and instructors have responded very favorably to the use of focus companies and the real world financial statements. The companies chosen are interesting and the decision-making focus shows the relevance of financial accounting regardless of whether the student has chosen to major in accounting. This text has enjoyed tremendous success, and will continue to do so because of its timely, real world and relevant content, its solid pedagogical features, and its appropriate balance of innovative and traditional content.

Power in the Southern Cone Borderlands or Direct Digital Control for Building HVAC Systems

Power in the Southern Cone Borderlands: An Anthropology of Development Practice

Author: Carmen Alicia Alicia Ferradas

Development is not an all-powerful machinery imposing its will upon powerless actors. Rather, it is a complex process that brings together multiple actors with diverse agendas. Participants' power in affecting outcomes results from their ability to mobilize discursive and material resources and to control and manipulate time and spatial contexts. This work critically examines development practices and various forms of collective action based on detailed ethnographical analysis of the Yacyreta hydroelectric project. The story unfolds in the borderlands of Paraguay and Argentina in the heart of the Latin American Southern Cone where local political cultures are responding to global forces that now dictate economic integration. Although relatively unknown today to the world, this area promises to exert a strong global impact in the near future.

Booknews

Analyzes the case of the Yacyret<'a> hydroelectric dam and its effects on citizens and political processes in Paraguay and Argentina, showing how and why the initial dream of development turned into the current, unfinished drama. Presents the history of the dam as an illustration of the transformation of development discourse and practice in recent decades, and provides clues to understanding how local political cultures react under the increased influence of multiple global economic, social, and cultural forces.
